5 Summer Activities to Reduce Stress and Improve Mental Health for Young Adults on Long Island

Feeling overwhelmed this summer? You’re not alone.

Between the pressure to “make the most of summer” and the FOMO that comes with endless social media scrolls, many teens and young adults find themselves more stressed than relaxed.

The good news? Long Island offers countless opportunities to reset your nervous system -if you know where to look.

As a therapist based in Roslyn, I’m sharing five local, therapist-approved summer activities that support your mental health and help you actually enjoy the season.

1. Unplug with a Beach Walk at Jones Beach or Sunken Meadow

Nature is one of the most accessible forms of stress relief. Walking near water lowers cortisol levels and improves your mood. Try heading out early in the morning or just before sunset for fewer crowds and a peaceful experience. Bring your headphones or go tech-free and let your mind wander.

Pro tip: Leave your phone in the car to give your brain a break from scrolling and practice grounding your 5 senses in the here-and-now

2. Try Paddle Boarding or Kayaking at Oyster Bay or Port Jefferson

Movement + water = a perfect combo for managing anxiety. Paddleboarding and kayaking offer a full-body experience that’s both grounding and energizing. You don’t need to be an expert. Many local spots offer affordable rentals and lessons.

Mental health bonus: Focusing on your balance in the moment helps quiet anxious thoughts.

3. Attend a Yoga Class in the Park

Outdoor yoga has been shown to enhance relaxation and improve focus. Look for free or donation-based classes in towns like Huntington, Port Washington, or Roslyn.

Search terms to try: “Outdoor yoga Long Island 2025” or “Free summer yoga near me.”

4. Visit a Local Farmers Market

Mindful eating starts with mindful shopping. Strolling through a farmers market is a sensory experience that encourages you to slow down. Smell the fresh herbs, taste a new fruit, and talk with local growers. It’s a great solo or low-pressure social activity.

Check out:

  • Roslyn Farmers Market (Sundays)

  • Huntington Village Farmers Market

  • Port Washington Organic Market

5. Create a DIY Mental Health Picnic at Planting Fields or Old Westbury Gardens

Grab a journal, some snacks, and a soft blanket. Spending time in nature journaling or sketching helps reduce overthinking and reconnects you to the present moment. Invite a friend…or don’t. This is your space to decompress.

Make it intentional: Set a simple goal like “no phone for 30 minutes” or “write down 3 things I’m proud of.”

You don’t need a big vacation to take care of your mental health this summer. Small, intentional activities can make a big difference, especially when you choose experiences that align with your values and needs.
